Aluminium Pre-Treatment for Powder Coating
At KINGS Powder Coating & Blasting, every great finish starts with a perfect foundation. Our aluminium pre-treatment process ensures exceptional adhesion, corrosion resistance, and surface quality before powder coating is applied. Through a combination of chemical and mechanical preparation methods, we create a clean, active surface that guarantees a long-lasting and flawless finish.
The KINGS Advantage
At KINGS, we don’t cut corners when it comes to preparation — because the best coatings start with the best pre-treatment. Our meticulous process ensures:
- Maximum Corrosion Protection: A chemically stable, non-reactive surface that prevents oxidation.
- Superior Adhesion: Strong mechanical and chemical bonding between aluminium and the powder coat.
Long-Lasting Results: A finish that stays durable, vibrant, and resistant to harsh environments.
Step 1: Degreasing
Before coating begins, all aluminium components undergo a thorough degreasing process to remove oils, grease, and surface contaminants.
- Methods: We use solvent-based or alkaline cleaning solutions for complete surface purification.
Why It Matters: Proper degreasing is critical — any residue left behind can drastically reduce the bond between the powder and the surface.
Step 2: Chemical Conversion Coating
Next, we apply a chemical conversion coating to create a corrosion-resistant, bond-ready surface. This process enhances both the durability and longevity of the final finish.
- Iron or Zinc Phosphate: Traditional methods that promote excellent adhesion and corrosion protection.
- Titanium-Zirconium Coating: A modern, eco-friendly alternative to phosphate coatings that delivers superior performance without harmful by-products.
Chromate Coatings (Legacy): Once common but now largely replaced due to environmental concerns.
Step 3: Mechanical Surface Preparation
For certain projects, we also use mechanical pre-treatment methods to achieve the ideal surface texture for coating.
- Sandblasting: Removes scale and creates a uniformly roughened surface for optimal adhesion.
- Light Whip Blasting: Ideal for delicate aluminium surfaces that require precision preparation without excessive abrasion.
Step 4: Rinsing and Drying
After treatment, every part is thoroughly rinsed to eliminate residues and ensure a clean, contaminant-free surface.
- Rinsing: Typically performed with clean water followed by a final deionized or purified rinse to maintain surface purity.
Drying: Parts are oven-dried to ensure complete moisture removal before powder application.
